Ok thanks, would a cadet rifle in that serial number range with a upgrade Buffington rear sight would that now be considered a 84 cadet? Were cadet rifles ever used in battle?

I'm confused. There are no cadet rifles listed in that range. Of course, the data is incomplete, but one usually finds at least a couple of what they were looking for, if there were any. So, that is moot.

The military placed great stock in the Buffington sight and retrofitted it as widely as possible. It would seem from the very large number of SRS "84R" notations, numbered way prior to that date, that at least some official records must have referred to them as such, and, of course, for all practical reasons (ignoring modern collector pickiness) they would have been.

AFAIK, no cadet rifles were ever intentionally used in battle, as they were not issued to combat troops.

I was looking at a rifle in that range it was shorter than normal 73 rifles so i assumed it was a cadet it also had non-cadet features. The stock may have been field replaced, I have questions on field replaced stocks I will put in a new thread.

Given the near perfect interchangeability of most of the parts, it's hard to tell, after 140 years of handling, what abortions have been assembled. Sometimes you just have to say - "it looks nice, but I don't think it is real".
