Have had this one hiding for a little bit until I could get it cleaned up, probably overpaid for it and its got a long way to go but its definitely an interesting piece. The stock is cartouched I.C.C R.I.A, the barrel unfortunately has a very small spot of pitting in it, other than that it gauges new and looks almost perfect.

Nice. A reclaimed W&S rifle that belonged to the Corps. Probably picked up by the Corps just before WWII and rebarreled, etc. A very nice find. I used to shoot mine, and it was the most uncomfortable rifle I ever fired. Very accurate though.

At the time of that particular hit, the USMC were seeking replacement parts for the M1908 W&S Musket Sights.

would there maybe be a chance of finding a record for this one, it probably has an interesting history, also does that seem like a stock repair or would that have been a chunk of stock that was cut for the mount, ive never seen a real W&S up close.

I believe the M1908 was used as a sight for other weapons than the rifle in the Corps. Even the Army had dumped the W&S scopes long before then as a rifle scope. I could be wrong

The USMC was seeking replacement parts for the M1908 W&S Musket Sights. This correspondence took place between the Chief of Ordnance as well as Warner Swasey multiple times.

I will have to check my documentation, but all I have for it at this time is that they were corresponding with the Chief of Ordnance and W&S for replacement parts, a motive or which rifle was not established.

This is documented at the National Archives.

I remember the rifle from the gunbroker auction. It sold quite high, especially because it will never be a W&S sniper again - with this USMC hit and having the Hatchers hole. Please do not try to restore it, but keep if for being an interesting piece, a sniper turned back into a service rifle and given to the USMC. And the SRS record dates to 1929, while the barrel indicates another rework later.

The most ill ever do to it, is acquire the rest of the parts in the condition respective to what there is now and let it be until its time to pass it on to someone else. I definitely like to hunt documentation on it if possible though.
