I was just looking on eBay and saw a sight sold as a correct rear sight for an 1896 saddle ring carbine. Sold for big money. I have the identical sight on a chopped up rifle that is missing only the letter "C" on the side of the ramp. I assume the C indicates carbine but in the world of markings I know you never assume. Any info?

Yes, C means carbine.
If your sight has the carbine (20) leaf (and slide - they are different) but the rifle (no C) base, then it would not be worth the big bucks. If you have the rifle (18) leaf, then you have no problem, but that sight is quite common.
M1896C sights are SO scarce that I would be very surprised to find (even part of) one on a chopped rifle.

$600. It was off a second block 1896c or later model carbine. All parts were carbine.

JBMauser - The 'Krag Collectors Association' website has some useful information on the various Krag rear-sights and the different Krag Hand-guards.
Google - Krag Collectors Association - and that should take you to the Home Page. Select the tab 'photos' and that will take you to pictures of various Krag related subjects. There is a good detailed explanation of a "Fake" model 1896 carbine sight that was made from an 1896 rifle sight. It details points to look for.
