Rock Island Auctions had their regional today. Some good stuff.

The steal of the auction (https://www.proxibid.com/aspr/Collector-s-Lot-of-Two-U-S-Springfield-Krag-Bolt-Action-Long-Guns-A-Springfield-Model-1892-Krag-R/30275473/LotDetail.asp?lid=30275473&rfpb=0#Top)

I was after some other fish but did put a bid in on those. Taken by somebody on the floor. Me thinks they got a nice deal there.

Just to be "different" (I guess) 5MF likes to disguise his links as plain text. Hover your mouse over "The steal . . . . . "

Which it definitely was, to say nothing of a wake-up call to those expecting to pull big cash out of their collections.

There's something wrong with the tip of that cleaning rod. reproduction?
Also, I think that the rifle could've been one of those that has had its butt plate bent at the heel to allow the altered plate to "fit" against the altered stock where it's been shaved back to eliminate the curve of the toe. Look at the angles of the two plates. The rifle's butt plate looks to be at a different angle than the unaltered butt plate on the unaltered carbine stock.
There was a guy at the big gun shows that did this type of work who Bill Mook despised.

The guns themselves are at different angles. Run a straight edge along the top of the barrels and that's clear.

Wasn't on site to inspect them. When I first noticed those, when the auction went up, I considered driving down. Life interfered.

Whether the cleaning rod is right or not doesn't materially affect the value to those two guns vis-a-vis what they took. Yes, cleaning rods are rare, but toss the cleaning rod in the picture and ask if that was a deal.

Did not see them in person, but had the fellows at RI describe them to me. I believe the rod was real, rifle probably OK but rough condition from his description. The carbine had a rifle sight, they believed the cartouche was not original. The pair sold for $3000, so roughly $3500 with premium. I do think this was a good deal, but the guns needed work, expertise and some parts. I wish I could have seen them in person as well.
