Model 1873 Trapdoor, s/n 302223. Cartouche indicates 1885 mfr date. Some large numbers stamped deeply on the butt stock, 1 and 18. Another stamping is A9 on several locations.

Thanks,

Merc

No listing for your number. Close means nothing but the closest is 302222. Interesting as its 04- 24 - 02 F A powder testing. Stock marking are possibly militia or state units as regulars were not by order to mark weapons.

FWIW, I'm in the 245XXX range and mine was shipped in late 1880's to the Oregon Militia in 1890 which eventually became the Oregon National Guard in 1903.
Purchased in a Surplus store in 1954 near Ft. Lewis WA (now JBLM). Purchased by me in 2013.

Tom I new to this so maybe you can help me out when I look up 302222 it reads "30222284R 042402FA POWDER TESTING" so how did you know to drop the 84R in the serial number I'm trying to understand hoe to decipher the data?

Discus420. The 84R stands for 1884 rifle and is not part of the serial number. Look at the bottom of the pages in SRs books and you will see several codes 73C 73R Carbine rifle and some for cadets .
