Hello again,
As a follow up to my post on my M1903 Remington, I am now requesting the same info and opinions on my Springfield armory M1903. This rifle belonged to my father and I believe he purchased it in the late 1970's. This is the rifle I shot at very long range and did well with (for me) a couple of months ago. From what I can find on the internet the serial number places it as 1918 manufacture, at least for the receiver. The barrel is dated April 1942. This rifle may be restocked or refinished and have different parts like my Remington, as there appears to be a lack stamps on both the stock and the steel.
There are only two stamps on the stock that I can find. There is a "P" just below the trigger guard. There is what appears to be a "J" stamped in the well underneath the magazine cuttoff switch.
On the metal there is the barrel date and logo, an "H" stamp on the bayonet lug, and the barrel band is stamped with a "U", rather faint. The bolt is stamped with and "R" in two locations, along with the number "42". Is this a Remington bolt? I can't think of anything to add. Please let me know if you need more info or photos.
