A friend has one on a 98k. Is it the same 48 on Springfields?

Don't know, but Lyman gave it a different number, 48 M, vs 48 S.

The base is most likely different, K98k is a large ring while '03 is a small ring and both have different shapes at that point

"Small" and "large" refer to the receiver ring. Lyman 48 normally attaches to the bridge - at the other end of the receiver. Of course the contours of the bridges are different and require different sight bases to fit.

Not the same. Lyman has a chart that will help. Sincerely. bruce.

There is a Lyman 57SME (Springfield Mauser Enfield) it will fit an Arisaka as well. So yes there is a Lyman that fits either a Mauser or an 03. The Lyman 48s on the other hand are specific. The current ones are aluminum but the older ones are steel and are good sights.

And the 'bridges' are a different dia., the small ring being smaller, same dia. as that receiver and the large ring bridge is the same as that receiver. Get your caliper out or even your micrometer if you want to argue thousands!!!!

And when you order these 'one model fits all' do you have to specify what rifle it is for??? hmmmm!

Perhaps you should take a close look at some Mausers.

Large ring steps down some 3mm, leaving remainder of receiver, including bridge, at same 33mm diameter as small-ring models.

(This ~33mm bridge diameter, common to many military rifles of the era, is the reason the Lyman 57SME, with a relatively short base, can be used on several of them. The Lyman 48 has a taller base that is contoured differently for various models.)

L: 57SME, R: 48C (for '03)

So, if it's aluminum do you just smack it until it fits?
