374413744237443Recently I picked up this Springfield butt plate for an older carbine that I'm hoping to put together someday. It turned out to be wrong; it has no "US" marking and I haven't been able to find reference to anything like it. It looks like a Springfield plate; can someone tell me which gun it belongs to? Thanks

My opinion is that fits a Remington Rolling block.

Well; it doesn't come close to the butt plates on the rolling blocks that I have. Mine are 1870s, maybe they changed, I don't know.

Too much age, or too long in the dung (seasoning) pile. But, no faker would leave off the U.S. - that's where the money is to be made.

The early models used a butt plate similar to the Springfield.

Yes Tkacook, I found that Remington used a few similar looking variations on military issue rolling blocks. Some included the "US" while others didn't but Remington sold these rifles all over the globe. Dimentions of the plate I have are equal to the Springfield plates but thickness is greater and diameter of the mounting holes is greater. So far I can only assume the rolling block plates are also the same overall
size. The rolling block I have is a sporting versions. Thanks for the information!!

Looking close, it seems there might be old paint on this plate. I'll soak it to see if that reveals a hidden stamping.

I have seen many types of older pre 1899 American made rifles with same style butt plate so I would think you have quite a task on your hands figuring out what it goes too.

I am sure you are right about that mr.j and I won't be on a quest to identify it. Since I am new to collecting trapdoors and learning a bundle along the way, anything I discover is interesting and your input is very helpful. Are those other types with similar butt plates martial arms?
