I failed to mention that this rifles barrel is dated 1-38. Is this a little late for the serial number? Also, the floor plate screws are staked! Don't recall ever seeing this on Springfields. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Once it left the military, I guess it did what it was made for, shot a lot in matches and the barrel was replaced by a civilian who staked the screws.

The Marines staked or marked their trigger screws on their match rifles so they could make sure they didn't loosen. So I imagine a lot of match shooters did that back then.
It wasn't unusual to have a NM rifle rebarreled around that time period 1938 as long as they were the original owner.
