Marks on Norwegian Krag stock

I've had this 1910-dated Norwegian Krag for several years now and enjoy shooting my 6.5x55 hand loads at the farm. I have corrected a few things on the rifle like stoning out the word "Norway" from the receiver (someone felt obliged to "label" the origin, I guess, by etching it into the metal). I also removed a really bad "browning" job on the side plate and magazine gate, and reblued it. These were steps I took intentionally to return the rifle just a tad closer to military trim. The stock marks - almost notches - are a mystery, however. Nothing in the manual rotating of the bolt would leave these marks on the right side of the stock wrist. QUERY: is/was there some cleaning aid/device that would have defaced the wood in such a way over time? I'd like to know, as there really is nothing I can do to remedy such deep scarring. The photos don't give a very clear view of the marks. Are there corresponding marks on the fore-end or barrel that could indicate the rifle was roughed up in some kind of rack or carrying device?

Hopefully better pics. Too random for intentional notches, I think. Jon - only other equally deep scars are right side next to rear sight.

It looks like it bounced around with a tool box in the trunk of a Saab or Volvo.

It's still a nice rifle!

That one has NOT, been in my Volvo! Looks like someone with claws has been working the bolt and gripping the forearm.

Try steaming the wood, it may lift some of the dents or scratches out.
