Chuck gave me a Smith Corona O3A3 to sell for him a few days ago I just got around to looking at it and will post pics in the next couple of days. Details

Serial number puts it in the 1st 7000ish made. S.C. Barrel date is 11-42, 4 groove. Bore in very good shape and bright

Stock is defiantly Smith Corona with 1/2 inch Proof mark and square cut at rifle band. Lot of handling marks but metal is overall in good shape. No rebuild marks

All parts are Smith Corona except bolt shroud which is R marked. Striker and firing pin are S.C. but look like they are new and were replaced when R marked bolt shroud ended up on it. (local repair or post military use, who knows).

Questions:

1) Barrel date seems a little early but in the first few months I suppose anything can happen
2) The correct parts are blued or parked except I think the bolt. Bolt is X marked but is parked. I was thinking it was blued originally
3) Small "G" stamped in front of P proof mark on stock. Is this a S.C. mark
4) there is a hand written letter on the bottom of the barrel and receiver very close to each other. Looks like some kind of inspectors mark or manufacturing tracking mark maybe. Never saw this before.

Gun looks like it was handled some but not shot much. It's a nice example. Wish I had the coin to buy it now, but I got to many irons in the fire. I will post pics hopefully tomorrow.

Barrel date seems right to me. 4 groove, huh? I would have bet money it was 6.

Yes, the original bolt was blued. I think the current bolt belongs on a later SC rifle. I believe the early SC bolts were not marked with an "X".

Stock in the photos is a Remington. 3/8" circled P and square cut for the band spring.

Thanks for the update. Once again know just enogh to be dangerous. I was thinking the Square cut was S.C./ Round Remington when I typed this. Why can't I keep that straight in my head. Remington I'll post it on the for sale group here for a few days see if a anyone is interested.

Also I read the 1st 5000 got six groves, so just matching the receiver it would have just missed that. Once again that was on the internet so I stand to be corrected.

Nice rifle, thanks for sharing. So....what is the confirmed groove count on your rifle?

I'm using a IPAD Mini so pic gets grainy when I blow it up but I swear I'm counting 6 grooves.

What works for me is focus on the grooves where they come up to the muzzle and start counting carefully clockwise.

Yep we have a six grove. Dang looked at a lot of S.C. Over the years first six groove I've seen.
