I have been waiting to see how long it would take for the Edmonton Eskimos team name to come under fire. I have never thought that the name was a slur; if anything I thought that it was a complement to the strength and hardiness of the Inuit people. The issue is just another example of the willingness of people to choose to be offended, usually for their own political purposes. Perhaps they could take a lesson from the music industry and style themselves something like the "Edmonton Endeavors - the team formerly known as Eskimos"

I think the natives' point is that they liked North America better before we paleskins came along, and no amount of naming sports teams in their honor is going to change that. Seems pretty straightforward to me.

How many Eskimos did they poll and where? Funny how liberal white people are always taking up a cause when there really isn't any.

Growing up a family down the street was proud to be Eskimo. Set them apart from all the other Indians in the area. Different heritage, different name.
Then suddenly the candy-assed do-gooders were telling me "Indians" was a racist word. Really? Radicals talk to radicals. Especially in the Indian tourist traps. Seems that on most reservations and in most city enclaves they still use the name Indian. American Indian in an official sense. The running joke is that they are "The only US minority that doesn't hyphenate and puts America first". I can live with that.

Now white people are messing with Eskimos......perhaps they'll have nun avit :^P

So are you now ready to "return" your property to the American Indian? Seems pretty straightforward to me. Realistically the American Indian fought each other for their AO and raided each other for female companionship.:eusa_shhh:

Maybe so, but they sure as hell learned to appreciate the paleskins' trade goods--metal weapons, cooking utensils, woven cloth, etc.

And by the way, wooly mammoths, mastodons, giant ground sloths, and many other species native to North America liked the place better before the first redskins showed up to begin driving them to extinction.

The PC Police at work. Orwell was right-control the language, you can control thinking, eventually, no Thoughtcrime because there will be no way to express it. Why bother with team names then-just the Edmonton CFL Team, Edmonton Hockey team, whatever. Keep it nice and generic.

In Washington, DC, there is a big stink about the name of the football team, "Redskins". Racist. Problem is that 90% of Native Americans are not offended. If the football team needs to be re-named, what do we do about the state of Oklahoma? Oklahoma is loosely named from the Indian words for "red people".

Wait until PETA starts wetting their panties over teams named for animals. Meanwhile...why aren't teams named Yankees or Canucks etc. considered offensive???

Because they're white and anyone can say whatever they want about whites and Christians. As for the Indians, there is a huge indian casino in my area called Foxwoods, as you get on their land, they have their own signs saying Indian Reservation. Guess it doesn't bother them.

Indians are just like all people, they hunt using a rifle, dressed in camo using a quad if they can afford it. You never see an Indian wandering about hunting with a sharp rock on the end of a stick dressed in furs. I really think that the vast majority are just like most thinking people, they do not give a rat's ass for political correctness.

All true.

Though I disagree with you on some things, at least you can see around the corners of issues sometimes.

WTF is going on here? I am trying to post a link to an article and I am getting an error message. This is a new problem. Anyone else having it?

Now that's the link. I posted my rant then went into edit and added the link.

Kind of appalling that a fairly well known university's teams slander the Irish. "The Fighting Irish" is derogatory.
"...and raided each other for female companionship..." Nope. Mostly raided for something to do.
"...Oklahoma is loosely named..." Oklahoma was known as Indian Territory long before it was called anything else.
"...the city of Edmonton certainly needs to undertake...." Except for the part that they have no say in what a company calls itself. Neither does Junior and the Alberta Premier, who is a member of the Other Socialist Party. I guess they don't have enough to keep them busy. What with the unemployment and all.

Well, how about if they named a sports team for YOUR particular ethnic group? I mean, wouldn't you be insulted if there was a football team called "the Fighting Irish," or "the Boston Celtics?":evil6:

Not to mention snowmobiles, wonder how they can afford them? However I really doubt they had anything to do with the extinction of any animal!

Don't how they can afford them either, as all factory products cost far more there than in the lower 48.

But most paleontologists believe the extinction of the mammoths, etc., (that had been flourishing for millions of years in North America) occurred too quickly after the first "Siberians" migrated into N.A. to have any explanation except human predation. Never having seen any human being, these animals would have had no instinctive fear of them.

There are, of course, those who pointed out that Paleo-Indians killed relatively few mammoths -- "They'd kill one and sing songs about it for three generations."
