Did a little goohoo-ing, and the 2 rifles transferred from USS Breese to Epic 73, *MIGHT* have been transferred to a US Navy depot or unit at Noumea, New Caledonia, as the code name for the Noumea area is listed as EPIC as mentioned in a these entitled The Construction of Airfields during the New Georia Campaign of 1943-44: Lessons Learned by the United States Naval Construction Battalions by Joseph C. Zimmerman page 34 "A response to the 47th from the Bureau of Yards and Docks addresses this issue advising that 'spare parts have been and are being shipped to the spare parts depots located at EPIC (Noumea, New Caledonia) and EBON (Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides), in large quantities.' "
Hope this helps.

I would be curious if this rifle has vise marks on the barrel. That barrel date is about the changeover when they stopped getting barreled receivers from the Army and started to get loose barrels.
So I would be curious if this did have vise marks.
For what it's worth, neither of my 1.02 with 2$ or 28 barrels have vice marks.
I'm thinking more and more the vice marks were only present on rifle barrels that were replaced in the 40s.

Yeah that is the only trait never mentioned in the docs. I would love to know when it started.

You should know that the Marines won't spend good cash on *nice to have* tools, when *good enough* works.

The barrel does not have the "vise" marks. The 12-27 SA barrel just has a large P adjacent to the sight base and
the number 2 and couple of short straight marks, / or 1 ??
The stock marks are a large B on the top butt end, the number 17 just behind the trigger guard, and a large RI
on the fore end of the stock. Don't see the usual P or JFC, etc. either sanded off or never there.
The bolt has a R1 on top of the handle. No serial number on the bolt.
Hatcher hole in the receiver matches up perfectly with the large hole in the bolt. :hello:

p.s. Emri...Geese and Ducks flying over the house every day calling our name.....:1948:
The 12-27 SA barrel measures about 1.5 or so both ends.
Looks like a USMC rifle to me.

Does the R1 bolt, RI stock, lack of Proof stamps, indicate
maybe an early WWII rebuild? Bore looks nice and bright
and near new throat and muzzle measurements.
Thanks

The rifle was definitely overhauled immediately before or during WWII. The R 1 bolt is probably a Bubba-installed replacement.

FWIW=Marine replacement stocks usually had no inspector's cartouche.....Usually no P at the wrist either...My $.02.

I'd say maybe or maybe not. I have seen Marine serialied R-coded bolts before.

Not surprising. I don't think I've seen a Marine rebuild with a bad barrel. Not the Corps' style.

I've seen Marine serialized R-coded Remington bolts also. But an R 1 bolt is not a Remington bolt, and I have yet to find evidence that the Marines got any of those.

Marine M1903's have been out of service and in Bubba's hands for about 70 years. Bad barrels are not uncommon.

Even rehabilitated criminals will re-offend if given certain encouragement. And if your picture causes Rick to start flashing his picture...I will be re-OFFENDED!
I am now wearing Army BCGs from his last assault.

John you are absolutely right on both accounts. I'll attribute it to a brain fart.
And of course, bubba could have killed s good barrel, but I doubt many people out there shoot enough to wear them out, so improper storage is probably the biggest threat.
That being said, with the hyper focus on marksmanship and individual accountability, the Marine barrels I've seen have always been solid. Not a guarantee of course

Of those Remington bolts you’ve seen on USMC rifles, were they all 1903, or were any 1903A3 bolts?

Some were what you would call 1903A3 bolts.
