Documentary on the Science Channel claims the Arctic is melting mostly due to "red snow". AKA "Watermelon snow". A certain algae survives in cold climates. They give off warmth. As they do the surrounding snow and ice begins to melt. With the melt off, the algae reproduces thus more melt and more algae. The cycle has been so continuous for so long it's effect is becoming more and more measurable as the rate increases.

Here's a Wiki on the algae itself:

That's what I keep asking. Warmer winters, less snow and ice, and all the left-wing nutcases are under water -- who could ask for more?
