A3 2 groove barrels

Instead of starting a new thread, I'll ask here.

Other than the 1917...In regards to the A3 2 groove barrels only made during WW2 for the A3's? The 03's were only 5 groove?

2 groove barrels were also made as replacement barrels for the M1917 Enfield. The1903 replacement barrels were 4 groove I believe. I'm not sure of the rifling method.

From memory, (dangerous).
'03 barrels were 4 groove until WW11, then SA and Remington went to 2 groove. The only 5 groove were on original '17s.
I'll bet rifling type is stated in Brophy or Hatcher, but I am away from them now.

Springfield made only 4-groove barrels; Remington and (in very small quantities) Smith-Corona made 2-groove barrels. No military rifle manufacturer made 5-groove barrels in WWII.

Your math is a little off.

Remington started at S/N 3,000,000 and 100,000 of those numbers were set aside for Smith-Corona.

I think the "specifics" are approximately 348,000 Remington M1903s, 234,000 Smith Corona M1903A3s, 707,000 Remington M1903A3s and about 28,000+ M1903A4 sniper rifles.

See "The Rifle in America" Philip B. Sharpe 1947 or later PP 550-551. Button rifling was used, at least to some degree, late in production. Reportedly it was faster and with less wear on the tools than traditional methods.

John....I was assuming your list were ones documented not started at.... Thanks for the facts John, and the enlightenment.

Serial numbering began with SN 3,000,000


This total Remington production includes 348,085 M1903 “Modified” rifles.

Now I see what the list from JB website means... they utilized 1903 receivers at that serial number.
