I spent yesterday at the Ohio Civil War Show in Mansfield, OH and saw the usual number of vintage muskets, pistols and WW1 and WW2 rifles. Probably the nicest rifle I saw was a Winchester M1917 with a high serial number so it might have missed seeing any action during WW1. The stock and hand guard appeared to be unsanded and had all the usual inspector marks and stamps. I didn’t inspect the muzzle, throat or gauge headspace, but the asking price of nearly $1600 would indicate the rifle was in minty condition.

That's a good price if it is in fact original and in minty condition. A few years ago original excellent condition Model 1917s could be had for under $1,000. Lately I've seen them sell on auction sites for well over $2,000.

The fact that it’s a Winchester rifle adds to the value. I have no doubt the seller will get his asking price assuming it’s parts-correct. I believe more collectors have grown to appreciate the M1917 for its strength and looks.
