If the big island goes critical, a remote possibility, can we rescue our fellow travelers? I hope that CD plans are there just for this possibility.

Hope that doesn't happen. After Puerto Rico, the prognosis would not be encouraging.

How would you rescue ~ 185,079 people who are spread over 4,028 square miles? And a 5 hour flight from the U.S. Mainland or 4.5 days by ship.
If the Island blows there won't be any place to land anyway. Very likely to be no Big Island at all. 70% of Krakatoa disappeared in the 1883 eruption. The resulting tsunami won't be pretty either. Pearl isn't far from Hawaii. 40 minute flight. The current tours cost a fortune too.

remember the news stories leading up to the mount st. Helen eruption? it was no big deal until the eruption took 1300 ft off the top.

Doubt it will come to it, but if it comes to a serious eruption, expect that evacuation plans have already been made. Getting everyone off the island would be a challenge even for the capacity of the United States. JMHO. Sincerely. bruce.

with the likely ash cloud, nothing would be able to fly in it, so it would come down to the Navy's amphib fleet.

I remember when mt. Redoubt blew in Alaska twenty yrs. ago. An airliner flew through the ash cloud and it shut down the engines. Almost crashed the plane.
