Hi, I am told that when Smith Corona 1903A3 production ended, the company had around 28,000 serial numbered receivers which had not been made into assembled rifles. Do we know what happened to them? Regards, Bill

I believe the source of your information is grossly misinformed. Smith-Corona did indeed have a few receivers left over when production ended, but the quantity was not even remotely close to 28,000.

I was just quoting the SC info posted in Vi Shooter http://www.vishooter.net/sc_serialization.txt. I got to wondering because I just saw a James River rebuild which utilized a SC receiver #4870001.

The James River rebuild receiver you saw is a serializing error. The second and third digits are transposed. Several thousand were made. There was a war going on and rifles were badly needed. With no delay, the receivers were assembled to rifles and shipped. The source of the vishooter information is in error.
