Red....You tried to pull a fast one by deleting your posts in a bookmarked thread. However I forewarned you and was ready for anything. :icon_pirat:
I guarantee you that either the Brewers or the Cubs will not be in the play offs.
Red, those are some pretty heavy words in a race this close. We'll have to bookmark this thread to see if you're right three weeks from now. I know it's tough to be a Cards fan lately. You guys are so spoiled...but on the bright side you'd all make great Yankees fans! :)
Yes please do. Unfortunately the Brewers beat the Cubs tonight. That is a huge win. The Cardinals probably cannot catch the Cubs but maybe they can beat the Brewers into the wildcard game. That would be a huge win for the Cards that were pronounced dead in July. In any event the Cards are getting Bader and Bader.
Wrong....and where are the Cardinals today? :eusa_whistle:
Boy don't cross JB in Cub-related threads. Gotta say though (at the risk of reprisal) that the Bucs are giving them trouble, and the Cards may yet redeem themselves this weekend.

Reprisals.....from me? Nah. It's just baseball when you get down to basics. So little we can do about it. It's up to our favorite teams to perform and out perform their competition on any given day.
You may recall I never under estimated Pittsburgh. They are finishing strong. Just not close enough in the standings as I feared they might. This is their third big spurt of the year and it's too little too late as far as post-season goes. Keep your eye on them. As we Cubs fans learned to say (for 108 years) "Wait 'til next year!" :)
What I don't want to see is a tie between Milwaukee and Chicago. A sudden death playoff game for the division title. Then the loser plays sudden death again the following day for the Wild Card spot in the NL. That's a lot to ask of any team. I don't care if they are the Brewers. ;)
It's Gun Talk. Not children's games played by arrested adolescents for millions of dollars. snicker.

Do tell? When does a game become a sport? Inquiring minds would like to know.

Blue Jay's have a bad year? :)
"The cracker barrel forum. Post whatever you like." Including crotchety trolls I guess. No matter.
JB maybe God stuck his foot out in the bottom of the eighth inning last night? Heaven ordains this is the year!

He spiked the Gatorade in the bullpen! It was scary. The Cubs were able to repent by the 10th though. I was breathing a little easier tonight until....Yeah. Carl Edwards is on the mound in the 8th. Crap!

Hey....they finished ahead of the O's just like everyone else.

OK JB, I was wrong, The Cardinals fell on their ass. Their minor league pitching staff including their fireballer reliever that was pitching in A ball last year couldn't keep it up.
Just as I couldn't keep up defending the American way of life against the twisters and turners, the Nazi's and burners when guys like you started joining them. You flatter yourself when you assume "deleting your posts in a bookmarked thread..." was me trying to be retract my prediction. In fact that was just one of 300 posts I deleted when I quit. Have a good time with your new BFF togor and his other low life traitor followers.

Red, let me start by reminding you this was a simple baseball thread that anyone/everyone is welcome to join. No politics. No verbal attacks. Just baseball and the post season race. Razzing is fine but there hasn't been any taunting and it's going as well as can be expected. You were welcome too. I only started a new separate thread because I noticed you retracted your postings on the original. Which by the way, caused me to take a closer look before starting it and I did in fact notice you had deleted not all of your postings, but just the ones on the "most recent" list but for one. Wasn't my place to say in open forum so I didn't. Only mentioned the ones pertinent to the present ongoing subject.
(FWIW I used to moderate another board and I have seen that before.) You didn't cancel your account so I was hoping you were still lurking and would join in. You did and I was glad to see you at first. Then you disappointed me by adding unfounded accusations. Shame.
C'mon now Red. Just because I trade banter with those you dislike I'm a Nazi/burner/traitor? Seriously? When did you become a hold-out member of the Japanese Tokko?
I recall both agreeing and disagreeing with...let's say "Togor & Co." and yourself on equal terms. Yet I always felt you and he would be welcomed in my home. Until now. When someone brands me with outlandish accusations and dictates who I may or may not speak to, then that forces me to choose how I interpret that individual. 'nuff said about that on my part.
This thread is about Baseball!
Last night I went out wearing a Chicago Cubs shirt and a Detroit Tigers cap. The NLC race is tightening like a noose.
JB, going down to the wire! I'm a Cards fan for the weekend but won't be donning any gear. One of my good buddies with whom who I coached youth baseball is from Columbia, MO, so he comes by his Cards allegiance honestly.

The way things are going into the 6th tonight we just may have a long distance tie breaker tomorrow. YIKES!
It's close. Let's go Tigers! :)
Two games in a row the Brewers fall into early 3-0 holes and rally on Yelich HRs. The guy is carrying his club. It's exciting but their starting pitching blows these days and Counsell is leaning heavy on the bullpen, which he can't do so much when the 25 man playoff rosters get set. Cubs meanwhile have 3 solid starters which is enough to make a run.

Cubs can't go anywhere without bats in the clinch. Brewers are hungry. Yes, Yelich is having a phenomenal month. Let's see what happens in Sunday's games?

You put the politics in it when you accused me of... "pulling a fast one" by deleting my post That was a flat out personal attack on my integrity. Up until you lied about that, I never said anything political on this thread. You stab me in the back and then claim I am being political? That sure sounds like twisting and turning to me.

Sitting here thinking if the roles were reversed....never mind.
Sudden death for Cubs and Brewers. This is getting more and more interesting.
Well whatever happens Monday, JB, there's still at least one more game to play. That will factor into the game thinking for both managers.
Weather would be better in Miller Park! Best October venue in upper Midwest.

Nah. Nothing better than baseball at the Friendly Confines. Here's the kicker. Our game kicks off first so the loser won't know who they'll be playing for the WC game. Mirror image divisional playoffs. Talk about a shootout!

A few weeks ago I bought another Cubs hat. The deal was 'buy one-get one 50% off'. So, I bought yet another 'stros hat! :)

Better Houston IMO than one of the Evil Empires in the AL East. MKE had 95 wins which is nothing to sneeze at but in the playoffs you need starting pitching to go anywhere. Good off-season project for Stearns, their GM.

I have a lot of faith in Houston and see no reason they shouldn't be able to go for a repeat. I could use another Astros World Series hat. My '17 version looks as though it's been worn hard for a year.
That having been said, if the Cubs regain the spark they showed in '16 then all bets are off. :)
If anyone is scratching their head about my loyalties, I have only actually LIVED in two cities. Chicago and Houston. Way back when, I even worked part time on the grounds crew at the Astrodome for a while. But....I blame the Texican family that moved in across the street from me in the 60's. Living a couple of blocks from Wrigley (we still called it Cubs Park back then) we made sure we saw at least one Cubs home game against Houston whenever they were in town. Same with me for the Cubs at the 'dome when I lived there.
In 2005 I may have been one of the few Chicagoans who didn't jump on the White Sox bandwagon just because they were from Chicago. I wore an Astros jersey and my old .45's cap throughout :)

A new flag to fly at Miller. Congratulations Brewers. They most certainly earned it.
I hope the Dodgers/Rockies game goes 17 innings. The Cubs need to go up against someone not so hot. LOL
I'll enjoy it while it lasts, JB. Most years the Brewers are not in sniffing distance of the playoffs. Only one WS appearance in '82, where they lost in 7 to the hated Cardinals. If Rollie fingers doesn't go down with arm trouble that year, it's Brewers in 5. The Brewers are sort of the Detroit Lions or Jacksonville Jaguars of MLB, except that the Lions did have the 1950's.
JB it looks like the Rox are coming to town. Gotta think it's advantage-Chicago but anything can happen in one game.

I'd hate to see the Cubs miss the playoffs this year. I painted myself Cubbie blue, burned goat hair and White Sox jerseys, and howled at the moon 13 times. Next I bring out the Cubs fan secret weapon. I'm going to cross my fingers and repeat the words, "Don't choke-dont' choke-ohhhhh-please don't choke" for 9 innings"

Oh well...
Reminder for the 2019 Cubs. No clutch hits = No runs on the board.

Tough deal JB but yeah hard to win if a club doesn't score.
When the true off season is upon us I would like to start a thread about the watchability problem of MLB. I'm conflicted because the same changes that slow the pace of the game also help small market clubs compete.

I'm not sure where you're going with that, but it'll be interesting to find out.

Don't want to rush the conversation, but consider starting pitching. Anyone who has played or watched enough baseball knows that each time through the order the advantage shifts from the pitcher to the hitters. The pitcher tires, and the hitters get dialed in. Starting pitchers who can consistently go deep in games and average less than 3 runs per 9 innings pitched have been one of the best ways to get into the playoffs and stay in them, but there are never enough of those guys to go around in the league and consequently they make a boatload of money. If a club assembles 2 or 3 top tier pitchers on the staff it requires a huge payroll commitment outside the range of all but a few major market clubs. So there is a huge incentive for poorer clubs that want to compete to dive into the data and see if they can't put together a different formula for getting adequate pitching.

I haven't taken a lot of time to reflect on that. But....pitching has been a problem for baseball since day one. Just another set of problems. The unfair advantage is what the public will pay for concessions. Six dollars is the major league average for a beer. Yet the Cubs just jacked it up to $13 for a can of Bud Light and they're getting it! Multiply that by 30 to 40k per game and you've got a pitchers salary right there.
Is it least a 16 oz can for $13?
BTW my sister in Milwaukee said playoff tickets were sky high and the the Cubs lost & prices came down. She says the Miller Park season ticket holders like to gouge Cubs fans which explains the attendance situation when the Cubs are in town. There is border friction but the teams themselves keep it professional and I think that is a good thing.

Milwaukee and Chicago being so close, and the Brewers starting in the AL meant a lot of NL Cubs fans in beertown. I'm sure some of that fondness is still there. It has always been a baseball friendly town. I spent a lot of time at the old Mil Co. Stadium back in the 80's. I could drive up for a game on Thursday after work and be on time for the job on Friday morning. After all, when the AL choice is Brewers or White sox..... I will admit going to Comiskey to see AL teams in town. Things are better these days with inter-league play.
Watching the Yankees game. They (announcers) just reminded me that the A's had the one of the lowest payrolls in the majors. The A's are in the ALWC game. Low payroll-smart shopping?
Speaking of the A's, Whenever I see Lucroy, in my mind he's still a Brewer :)
