It’s interesting how dog tags have changed over the years. ”T”plus the date is when the tetanus shot was given.

Thanks for posting. Thanks to JFK's stupid stunts with Russia and Cuba the schools issued dog tags to children in 1961 and '62 while the adults were busy building bomb shelters.

C'mon Bruce, this has been hashed out here many times. JFK brought us to the brink of WW111.

So, where were you during the Cuban missle crisis?

I was going to communications classes at the Naval Training Center in Pensacola, FL. JFK’s assassination? I was aboard the aircraft carrier USS Shangri La, CVA-38 on full alert in the Mediterranean Sea.

I was in the 2nd or 3rd grade (30 miles from Pensacola, FL). I remember getting 2 of these, probably one a year. We were told to wear them by the school but no other explanation, they left that up to our parents to inform us that it was for ID in case we all got annihilated by enemy nukes.

ha ha, wear them in case you got annihilated by enemy nukes.
like the tag will be in one piece!
I was never issued them until I got in the army in 1965. Our tags didn't have the notch in them either. Matter of fact I got my original dog tag given to me at a ceremony at the Howard County Vietnam Vets reunion in Kokomo around 2000 or so. They had recovered them from Vietnam, probably from where I got medevaced from...Dau Tieng in Aug 1968.

My ex had dog tags as a five year old in the New York city school system (1940s). They looked just like my 1950s Air Force tags less the 'notch'. They had her name and complete home address on them.

I was in Basic Training at Fort Polk, LA, and Kennedy was assassinated the day before I graduated from Officer Candidate School.

I found one while Scuba diving off Hawaii years ago. it said "Royal Order Of The Purple Dorks" and "Roark" with a number. Some sort of unofficial military social club?

I was in basic training in Ft. Ord Ca. Not even done with training we were placed on alert. Rifles and bayonets but no ammo yet. When Kennedy was killed I was in the 101st abn and we got all our war stuff but nothing happened. Interesting times.
