Bend, OR. resident Robert Maxwell, oldest living WWII Medal of Honor winner passed away this past Saturday at age 98. One of the most humble, quietest people you could meet was awarded his medal when he threw himself on a German grenade that was thrown into the foxhole occupied by he and 4 others in France after D-Day. He was badly wounded, but was credited with saving 4 lives. In addition to the Medal of Honor, Bob eventually received 2 Silver Stars, 2 Purple Hearts, a Bronze Star, the French Croix de Guerre and the French Legion d'honneur.
RIP sir.
