View Full Version : ACC 2520 in the Swedish mauser load question
I got this big jug of ACC 2520. I use it in my Swiss and it's great. I'd like to try it in my Swedes. I just spent half an hour trying to get info on loads and have gotten nowhere. I'm trying to avoid having to buy a loading manual for one thing. Swedes don't get a lot of coverage in my books. I will be using 140 gr. Hornady rds with a lead tip.
I reload a lot for the Swedish Mauser just looked in my manuals no information on AAC 2520
look up its burn rate and compare to other known powders.
Well, I'm getting a little closer. I see 2520 is close to IMR4895. It was 99 out 150 on a Hogdon burn chart. I also see, it like 4895, is popular in .308 and 30-06(2520, not so much anymore). I found one little tidbit, after hundreds of links, that I might start with 33gr and go up to 37 in the M96. I never dreamed it would be this hard to find this information.
There's up to 129 grain data on Loaddata.com. And 120 grains only on No$ler's site.
There isn't a lot of 6.5 x 55 data available using ACC2520 from any source. Virtually no 140 grain data anywhere.
"...2520 is close to IMR4895..." Close does not count. DO NOT start making up your own data. IMR4895 was invented for use in the .30-06, but that means diddly when it comes to the 6.5.
Might help to give Hornady a call. Chances are good they've never tested any Accurate powders though.
No, I won't mess around estimating powder charges. I guess I'm going to try actually emailing some of these guys for information. I spent a full hr. yesterday googling. It's amazing, if you ask a question about loads on the internet you get forty guys all advocating vastly different loads for the same ammo. Of course rifles can have favorites, but if you don't own the exact rifle and year of manufacture what good does it do to know what Joe uses in his.
Well, that was easy. I emailed Accurate and got an immediate response. Accurate 2520 is to fast for the Model 96.
That makes sense given the case and bore dimensions, and the fact that it's a small ring Mauser. Thanks for checking and posting.
So, what I'm doing is pulling the wooden bullets from the practice ammo. The powder left behind is fast. I did a test on the sidewalk with it and H380 side buy side. 100% faster. You don't want to use fast "pistol" powder in your rifle. Here's a little story: So I decided I needed to use all this leftover Swede practice powder for something. I picked up a spent last years fourth of July rocket and loaded it with this Swede practice ammo powder. I put a fuze in the end. I lit it and stepped back. BOOM. The rocket blew to pieces. That's fast powder. I use H380 and 4350 successfully in my Swedish rifles, but since I came upon this big jug of 2520 I kind of wanted to experiment with my other favorite caliber. Guess not. That's fine, I will use it in the Swiss rifles and keep the GP11 diamonds a little longer.
Accurate still has it.No data for it in the 6.5 Swede so I would assume that the results with it are not very good. It is listed on their burn rate chart as with IMR 4895 and Varget.
