View Full Version : Firewood theft

Went down to get more of the firewood and it appears that "someone" came in during the night and took a wheelbarrow load of the stuff. Unable to see who it is as their back is to the cameras and hoodie on. What is funny is that "they" had to walk back and forth where Wolf and Murphy do their "business" daily. The wood will have to be split and best of all it is mainly green and lousy to burn. The small stuff, which is on the other side of the covered pile, burns O.K. I am bringing up.
In April I am building a new wood storage area way closer to the cabin and more secure. Looking for "legal" ideas to protect the new stash for the fall.

game cameras,
near where the parked, and in the path,
and be sure to report the theft,
and move it to a more secure area as you cut it

From what you have described of your place in the past it is surrounded by woods where fallen limbs are probably abundant (no need to steal) plus no one in your area seems to be poor enough to need the firewood for survival. Wearing a hoodie, they may have assumed there could be a camera.
Sad that we so often have to see the worse in people because that is what they present.

So much for local economic opportunities.
No snow in Ohio? You could follow their tracks. With Wolf and Murphy as escorts. Failing that your new wood storage area is probably as good as it'll get. The resulting smoke from the green wood might help too.
"...back is to the cameras and hoodie..." Suggests they're familiar with your property and security system.
I suspect you'd have a hard time proving theft. Trespass, not so much, if you can ID the hoodie.
What's a wheel barrow of green wood worth?

We have some people who have been on the dole so long that they refuse to work, I know I dealt with people like that. Petty theft is the crime and yes, I do have my property posted as No Trespassing. The new storage is directly next to the house and I am going to build a lift so that I won't have to carry wood up to the cabin. I have a small 12 volt winch that will pull 1,200 pounds vertical. I will need to get a converter or possibly run it off of solar power...many options to choose from.
In the fall when I have emptied our propane tank I am having it removed and a small wood fired cook stove for my new kitchen. This in addition to the summer kitchen that I now use we will be able to cook without any issue. Also installing a wood fired furnace to heat the parts of the house that the propane now heats. This will save us about $2,000 a year on this fuel alone. I can buy wood slabs @ $20/ton if I haul it, that I can do without a problem.:banana100:

If I can find them I will use spent training grenade heads. Drill out where the primer goes, large enough for shotgun primer. Nail to a post, put in new primer with fingernail polish to waterproof it and string trip wire. Sounds like a .22 going off! :evil6::icon_redface:

This isn't much but perhaps more signs?

They're on ebay.
Tks!

Someone needed wood but too lazy to cut it themselves. Install a fence and make ‘em work for it. Motion sensor lights will help.

Food for thought.
If you have neighbors who will steal something as plentiful and valueless as firewood and wear a hoodie to keep from being recognized they may steal anything they can from you.
Are your tools, lawnmower, weed eater, chain saw, patio furniture, etc, etc. safe?
Stealing wood? That's a lot of work for nothing. I'd guess kids. Or really po folks who need to heat the house while the child is being born. Or just good exercise for youngsters. I live in AZ so that's hard to reconcile. Around here they might steal Freon or whatever the substitute is for that. I remember when the catalytic converters were a hot item. The Toyota trucks got hit a lot. Well, they sat so high you could just about sit in a lawn chair and work under the truck.
Gun Smoke is right; watch out for the next week or two. Thieves aren't much smarter than fish, they will do the same thing again. Try to steer them away harmlessly.

On my building I have 3 locks to navigate and all the big stuff is up by the house. Down in the driveway I have two motion sensor lights which click on for 1 minute and then reset. I will be installing a big solar light to illuminate the area and other ideas in thought. I have a nosey gossip locally and I let her know that when I catch the thief I won't call the law. :evil6::eusa_shhh:

When I was young most all the farmers that had a decent amount of land would talk about owning guineas. These birds will squawk at the least little thing alerting the dogs. A lot of people said they were the best watch dogs you could have.

Some really great suggestions. Guinea hens, barbed wire, ah.. beat the crap out of the kids and put them in a shed. I like satire, but not 7th grade satire. And it just went on and on.
And if you don't have the skills to put a shed together there are some illegals hanging around the Hardware Store. Get them to put it together and then beat the crap out of them and put them in the shed.

Can't get sued for having Guinea hens. They really don't like intruders and make a hissy fit. I can't get the picture to blow up but that's a rattlesnake they have surrounded.
I guess it's still going on and on just like the Energizer bunny.
A guinea gang? I don't know if I like that.

Spring loaded pepper spray. Pull trip wire, spring pushes can, nozzle hits stop and that wonder spray. Can be made out of any thin wall pipe.

Traps are a lawsuit and/or criminal charges waiting to happen.
