It began in 1880 and continued until 1999. The official reason for discontinuing the competition was because the services couldn't provide enough people. The real reason is likely that couldn't find enough women that could compete.

It is still an amazing portrait of the cohesion, speed, and stamina required by participants.

No women, no "equality." So change the rules, requirements, or if that STILL doesn't make women competitive, claim it wasn't worth doing anyway.

there's a reenacting group that moves a cannon across the Dan River in So Boston Va every Feb, part of a commemorative ceremony,

interesting to watch, esp in the snow
