Sub in dry dock , civilian set a fire. 17 year prison sentence. Repair costs est. to be 450 million,but, revised up later. also pipes and fasteners very prone to crack. Budget prevented repairs, rising costs of repairs, need to prioritize money for other ships . Sub in service 12 years, if repaired another 10 years. Replacement cost was est. 4 billion. Sub was improved Los Angeles class.
Ships have limited life. Destroyer tender ad38 in service for 29 years, then mothballed, then scrapped.
Cost to scrap one nuclear carrier is over 1 1/2 billion.
Cost of military hardware and operational costs are very high.

A10 is at least 6,000 @ hr, F16 is 8, f35 is 35. Missiles are darned expensive. Some eq is so expensive that mil is loathe to risk the loss in combat, or the new eq, very secret, being captured or salvaged to study.
