Impressive. Like to see what a .22 Magnum would do.

Never had the ability to test it, but supposedly a .22 LR round starts to lose velocity in barrels longer than 16 inches.
The .22 LR typically is about at its peak in a 16-18 inch barrel. But, reality is that the few FPS one way or another are within the margin of shot to shot variation using common hardware store ammo. JMHO. Sincerely. bruce.

At 15-20 fps loss per inch for extra barrel length, shot to shot variation doesn't matter.
As a young hunter, I remember seeing the warning label on box (I think the flap): Danger: One Mile!

18" is what I've read. Anything beyond that adds to accuracy but the bullet starts losing velocity.
I shoot a lot of 22cb (shorts) where I live due to the VERY reduced noise levels over the LR. Though they won't function in most auto's they are surprisingly accurate and powerful.

The .22 is a very good rd to have for various duties. Back in 1965 I started shooting with a Stevens 73Y and Remington .22 shorts. I cut grass and made $2.00 each Saturday and I could buy a box of Remington of $.50 My Dad gave the Hardware store owner where Dad traded permission to sell me all the ammo I wanted. A single shot and 100 rds lasted me most of the afternoon killing tin cans and dirt clods. Those were fun summer days!
In our supply of ammo we have .22 shorts and some cb for my daughter's Savage rifle. My Ruger 10/22 of 50 years gets the CCI and now refound Wildcat. With the right scope the .22 LR is a lethal hunting round out to 150 yards.

They're powerful enough at short range, but I've never been satisfied with their accuracy, even out of target rifles. Accuracy of the LONG CB's is even worse, though the bullet is closer to the rifling; I think that's because the longer case causes inconsistant burning of the powder, a problem any time case pressure is too low.
I'd like to test some of CCI's new reduced velocity LR's--700 fps; ought to provide better accuracy than the CBs.

BIL shot shorts-much cheaper than long rifle cart. possibly, 30 Cents vs 50.
Pistols no expansion, rifles -yes. Pistol penetration is some 10 to 12 inches. So, little stopping power, good wounding power. Sensible felons back off. See Grigg Ellifritz article.
When young, I shot abandoned inflated car tire. Surprise-bullet bounced off and went-somewhere. Yeah, I felt lucky and dumb.
Older hammer pistols esp small 22s, should be carried with no round in chamber , even if hammer is down. If dropped, they may fire. Yes, very dangerous. Just like older single action pistols and earlier Rugers. Empty chamber must be under hammer to be safe. Ruger will do free mods and return old parts to you.

Luckygunner.com has some exc. articles on pocket pistols, incl 22, the effectiveness and deterrent effect. ,available pistols. Also, plenty of articles on many topics and gel tests. See Greg Ellifritz (i-net) for the effectiveness of various pistol calibers.
