Thought someone here may be interested in an 1870 carbine just posted on guns international. Not a bad price if correct but it's just way out of my reach LOL!!

Rear sight is faked/incorrect. Front sight looks funny.

Dick Hosmer

Barrel band is wrong, stock is funky, front sight is brand-new, block inscription and rear sight (homemade?) have been dicked with, muzzle crown is wrong, rear sight located improperly, cartouches wrong, no wear from sling ring, mixed patina, wrong finishes, whizzed overall to try and conceal some of the above, etc. etc. - POS. Run, do not walk, away - fast!!

Didn't look too close at it as the price is too high for me Kragrifle.
Thought if it was correct someone here may like it??

Well Dick, now that you and Kragrifle say it's no good I wish that I could delete this. Sorry I didn't look closer.

Not your fault - few people have had the opportunity to know the little quirks by seeing one first-hand. We (or at least I) greatly appreciate any/all such items being called to the attention of the group - that's how we all learn.

Thanks Dick, I appreciate your knowledge :1948:

Carl, Leave it here as a public service. E-bay has made it impossible to warn potential buyers that the item is trash, fake, bogus history to promote sales. it has nothing to do with their claim of buyer, seller confidentiality.

if yall would like I can prune (delete) this thread (prefer not to, since I believe what Mr Hosmer says is true, we can learn from this)

or I can sticky if needed,

or lock,

or just leave it be,

just let me know what you prefer

gotta admit, after looking this auction over, and then looking at his other auctions,

dude needs to learn how to take a picture, (they are all horrible!!!)

On-line auction sites are like that. Lotta dealers who think they're going to get rich selling to new shooters/collectors on 'em.
I suspect that one has been refurbished/rebuilt/refinished.
E-Bay doesn't want you to be allowed to own any firearm. They actively fund the people who want to take 'em away from you. Last I heard they do not allow any firearms on their site. They have been known to confiscate, as in steal, funds from firearms related sellers too.

Since Dick feels it could be a learning experience it should stay or even be a sticky. Since myself and others can learn from this auction that is a good thing ☺️

done, and I added a Buyer Beware disclaimer to the title, if that is ok

I suppose to cap this off, a real M1870 Carbine should be pictured. Here is mine. It is not free of flaws, unfortunately. At some point in time it apparently suffered some damage in the muzzle area, requiring re-crowning and replacement of the front sight, which was done SO crudely as to deny any possibility of attempted fakery. EVERY other feature of the arm, including barrel diameter, is 100% correct. I have hemmed and hawed about "fixing" the sight for almost 40 years - and the main reason I have not is because it WOULD then look fake. Actually the perp in question got it pretty close, but it just screams "new".

To continue this old thread, there are two "1870 carbines" presently on GB. The one for $3,650 is real, albeit rather over-cleaned for my tastes - however it IS a chance to own a great rarity for a relatively modest price. The one for $1910 is a real POS, a fact of which I (very tactfully) advised the owner, but he has not altered his description, or pulled the ad.

Yep, that's why so many come to this site and others, is to learn. The numbers that can "teach" are getting fewer and further apart.

The funky one has been, or will be, pulled. Story is that it was a consignment gun and he trusted the guy, but apparently shouldn't have. Was very gracious about the whole thing.

That supper duper shinny one has been on G B for quite a while. If not for the stock repair and the cartouche sanded off a pair of sun glasses would take care of the glare :icon_lol:

If not for the stock repair and the cartouche sanded off a pair of sun glasses would take care of the glare :icon_lol: Not the best looking example, but, it IS real. One could always grease the important parts and hang it (less stock) out in the weather for a couple of years, I suppose.:1948:
