A Japanese general said it best: “We sunk a few of their battleships and they brought us the sun.”

My old man was on a destroyer (dd390) and was in the shower when GQ was sounded. He went to his battle station dressed in soap, a helmet, and a towel. My mom related the story to me, he never spoke to anyone but her about the war.

Although everybody now knows the name Pearl Harbor, that wasn't always the case. My mother used to tell the story that she was in hospital, having just given birth to my elder sister when someone ran into the ward and yelled "The Japs have bombed Pearl Harbor". The reply from the patients including my mother was "What's Pearl Harbor?". Back in the day, few people travelled and nobody had been to Hawaii which was an exotic island out there somewhere in the Pacific.

The tv presentation, Road to Victory, did an excellent presentation on Pearl Harbor leading up to the actual bombing. For some reason, Admiral Kimmel did not put up torpedo nets around the anchored ships.
