It is an outstanding picture. And yes I was in the service if anyone asks.

William Wyler was the producer/director of "The Best Years of Our Lives." His career spanned the 1920s to the 1990s. Though a German by birth he was a hard core anti Nazi. During WWII he produced and directed documentaries for the U.S. Army Air Corps, the best know of which are "Memphis Belle" and "Thunderbolt." Making these movies was hazardous. One of his associates was KIA during one of these movie making expeditions. For "Memphis Belle" Wyler flew four combat missions in B17s and recorded some of the best air to air combat footage of all time. He decided to fly a fifth mission so he could get his Air Medal. He later said it was the most foolish thing he ever did and that he came very close to being killed.

"The Best Years of our Lives" was made out of Wyler's concern that returning veterans be treated with respect. It's a great movie and truly has stood the test of time. It won a whopping 7 Academy Awards including Best Actor for Frederick March, Best Supporting Actor for Richard Russell, the double amputee, and Wyler for Best Director.
