Any USMC Lyman Super Targetspot Experts Here?

Hello Gentlemen,

I recently aquired this Lyman 12x Super Targetspot and was surprised to find the electro engraved USMC marking under the serial number along with an inventory inspection tag.
The scope is in good condition, I had to let some oil sit in the turrets a couple of days to loosen them up to turn easily. The objective lens has been polished with something that appears to have rubbed through the optic coating, and there appears to be some slight haze on the inside surface of the lens as well. The inspection tag has the owning unit as "CRP" with the inspector's unit "RTE". I know what/who RTE is but not CRP, anyone have any idea? Serial number on the scope tube is 24289, anyone know about when this scope might have been produced?

CRP: Competition Rifle Program (PWS today)
LTI: Limited Technical Inspection, viewed the scope and made sure it was still a scope, had glass and a reticle.

The scope is part of the 3rd contract run for the Marines
Have a near identical scope but no lense caps, same metal box
Same tag possibly same 2111 inspector but cant tell from the pics
I dont have access to my records at the moment but think the number of the scope is not far off either.

Thanks! This scope did not have caps when I received it, these are new caps I found on ebay.

The tag has this printed at the top left side: NAVMC 1018 (REV. 6-85).

I was in the Marine Corps and had armory duties so I can understand that old tags get replaced with new tags on

serialized gear whenever there is nothing better to do. The written in date on the card I would imagine is reprinted

from an older tag or other document, written in date is 8 / 60. The inspector that signed the card appears to have

been Sgt. Ingram M.C.

I may end up with this on a Winchester 70 project in the future, or just keep it in a safe place for a while.

8160 is the Julian date so in either 1988, 98 or '08 it was inspected on the 160th day...

Can't remember when RTE changed to PWS so it's likely 88 or 98. Ingram sounds familiar...probably know him if I saw his face...

Hope you dont mind me butting into this thread but it seems closely related to a query I have raised on another forum.

I have recently seen a Springfield 30 - 06 fitted up with a 14x Unertl engraved SNIPER over USMC over the Unertl logo. Very nice condition/looking rifle and scope.

Doesnt convince as a service working set-up but possibly a competition rifle.

This is bugging me - obviously some USMC sniper experience here - can anyone help?

"...possibly a competition rifle..." Likely. Wouldn't put any money on it, but I doubt a shiney scope would be used in wartime.
"...engraved SNIPER..." Most likely a commercial version of the scope. USMC snipers don't need to be told that.
Does the front sight get in the way of the scope? Just curious.

about your lens,if you contact LYMAN in conn.as of a few trs ago they would still work on those scopes,I don't know to what extent,
they relaced cross hairs for me .Its worth a phone call.

Apparently Lyman sold all of their remaining inventory of parts for these scopes to Parson's Scope Service at some time in the last few years. I did contact Parson's to obtain a stop ring for the scope, they had it at a reasonable cost so I bought one.

I am not concerned about the objective lens as it is not scratched or anything bad, just looks like the coating has been rubbed away which I can live with on this particular scope.

If it is truly engraved, it is a fake. The real 8X ones are roll stamped by Unertl.

Note: USMC did not use 14X Unertl sniper scopes.:eusa_whistle:

There is a Yahoo Unertl Group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Unertl/?yguid=216449360 and in their files area they have an example of a faked USMC Sniper scope. They also maintain an extensive serial number listing which contains a number of USMC Sniper scopes. Also lots of Unertl documentation.

there are many many places that are competent and can completely rebuild lyman and unertl

i have talked to them about a alaskan that needed some touch up

i have two rifles scoped, and one is a Model 1922 with a douglas barrel and was done years ago to make a prone gun out of a model 1922, and man does that thing shoot

never tried the 8 power lyman on the 3006. might be interesting
but with the 3006 i shot a clean at camp lejeune with it
way cool, i used the hornady ammo that cmp supplied for the games. great stuff

Great looking rifle with the Lyman scope. I have 3- Model 70 Targets. One has a Unertal scope and the second has a J.W. Fecker. The third one has the period peep sights. I shoot the scoped guns out to 750-yards. The last on, I bought, shot 5 rounds into .290"at 100 yards. It was bedded and free floated, when I recieved it. I guess, the Mod. 70 Targets are my favorite rifles, since, I shot so much Hi-Power in the past at Camp Bullis and all around Texas. Keep em all in the 10-Ring! Devine 308
