In the March 2021 issue of American Rifleman is a good and interesting article on Japan's WW2 effort to produce a rifle copied after our M1 Garand. They were using caliber 7.7x58mm and a 10 round integral magazine.

There were some postings on the cmp forum last week about the caliber being 7,7x57mm which was developed by the Japanese
for their copy of the M1 rifle

It turned out that the caliber the Japanese used was not robust enough to reliably work the action. Plus problems with cartridge feeding.

"Forgotten Weapons" did an episode on the Japanese Garand about four years ago. If interested see the link below.

On pp 502-503 of my 1966 edition of Small Arms of the World is a brief mention of the Type 5. The 7.7 round was a standard round for them.

The information about the Japanese "Garand" M1 rifle copy using the 7,7x57mm cartridge first surfaced on the
International Ammunition Association website with photos. The information stated that Japanese naval officers
developed the 7,7x57 cartridge. I have a photo on my email
