It was probably faster backing up than going forward.

Knew a guy who had a Pinto with Firestone 500 tires on it. He called it a flamethrower with break away tires.

I knew there was something going on with the backwards flames. Thanks for the explanation. I'm old enough to know this. There was a Chevy that the cops used for a while that would explode if hit in the rear. I wanta say it started with a C, but try and find some story about it. We had a local cop that burned pretty bad but lived.
my uncle had a 1600cc model with a trunk, not a hatchback ,
another uncle had one with the hatch back, and the 2000cc motor,
he added a better came and it would actually scream for a 72 pinto,
my grandmother had a wagon for a bit,
neither got hit from the rear,
the lady that used to keep my brother and I after school when we were little had one as well , and we were in the back seat when she got rear ended once,
thankfully it was just a bump and we did not explode,,,
Had a 76 Pinto w/ the 4 cylinder Opel made motor. Gutted the catalytic converter to straight pipe status. Little car would run strong. Rear ended by fool going to fast. No problems. Drove that little car into the ground. Sincerely. bruce.

I did a lot of the Pinto/Bobcat recalls in 1978. Longer filler neck and a plastic shield on the differential so the tank could ride up over it. The longer filler so It wouldn't pull out of the tank.
The replacement parts often exceeded the value of the cars we worked on. There was nothing holding them together but the rust.
There was also a recall on the fuel line. The fuel filter was on the carb and the steel fuel line was connected to that with about a 3" section of hose. The hose rotted and cracked. When it did, it sprayed fuel at the distributor. Quite a few firey messes but not as many lives lost.

Nope that was never a cop car. The rubber gave way and poured gas all over the engine. Seriously; Seriously! Three inches of rubber was all they could come up with? I've witnessed a couple of LTD's burn. The third was my brothers, who, luckily had sold the car a week ago to someone else(she was OK and had insurance).

Cop car would be the Chevy Caprice Classic,
the last of the RWD Caprice's would fly,
I knew a local Cop that got to test one for his dept on a local highway,
supposed limited to 140 or so top end, and he had it up to 160 on a long straight,,,
the civilian version was badged as a Caprice for the grey haired crowd, and the faster one was the Impala SS

Some of Fords better ideas weren't good at all. However the patrolmen I knew loved their Crown Vic's. When the departments began changing over to the SUV platforms, most of the senior guys begged to go out in the remaining CV's in the fleet.
Wonky police cars: Any of the Houstonians here remember the HPD's AMC Gremlins? Going back to the 70's.
I think the cruisers were Dodge Monaco's.

I watch a lot of "cop" TV, the real stufff, not drama.
Jason Schechterle has been on several episodes of A&E network's "The First 48". Interesting to know the back story on his accident.
AMC Gremlin police cars? That sounds like something from a funny movie.

You're right, it does. But I kid you not. They were used mostly in the downtown area.

and all were POS's
Had a 1971 1600cc, wife had a 73 2000cc both were coupes. we got a 1977 wagon 2300cc. The 1600cc was one tough engine, was a english ford, the2000 & 2300 chewed up cams. The wagon was good in snow, the coupes not.
