View Full Version : Older Savage model 12 FVSS.
Seeing that I am digging some old Savages out of the back of the safe, I thought it might be fun to see if they still shoot. Did the model 10s earlier and now my favorite from that time period. Stock trigger. Scope is a Leupold VX-III 8.5 - 25. Nothing really fancy, but a hoot to shoot.
Model 12 FVSS from the 90s. .223 Load is Berger 55 gn FB Match Varminters over 24.5 gn of IMR-8208. Thanks Nez for the powder suggestion. 1 10 dot target shot for practice with a couple of misses and fixed with a follow up. Then shot a few 10 rnd groups at 100yds just for fun. Whatta Hobby!

Put 30 rnds down range today. This was my best 10 at 100 yds. 55 gn Berger flat base match varmint over 25 gns of IMR-8208. Whatta Hobby!

Old rifles like old wine ... just fine!!! Sincerely. bruce.
After allowing a few rifles sit in darkness for 20+ years, I have really enjoying shooting them again. Nice to get away from the semi autos for a break.

I have a Savage Model 12 Low Profile single shot .223 made in 2004 .
It's original 1x9 fluted barrel was outstanding with Sierra 69s and Varget . In fact it just bug holed with my old Service Rifle load and I was a happy guy. On the strength of that I stocked up heavy on both .
Well that Savage barrel held up well until about 8000 rounds , by 9000 it was more than obvious this throat-less barrel was toast.
I twisted on a 1x9 McGowen and changed out the bolt head { couldn't believe how much wear the original bolt head had }
The McGowen 1x9 barrel is outstanding .... but not with Sierra 69s . It is however a bug holer with Sierra 53 gr flat base match over 24.8 gr of 8208 ... at least at 100 yds.
Rgr on the Sierra 53 fb and the 8208.
Did you use a PT&G bolt face?
Nice thing about the Savage is the ease at which a barrel can be swapped out and headspaced. Love em.

Yep, it was indeed a PTG bolt face and I've been pleased with all my purchases from them
Does seem to be the place for the best of the best.
