Assembling a single shot 22-3000. What is the best/easiest way to produce ammunition for this caliber? Can you safely shoot modern 22 Hornet rounds with a 22-3000 chamber and single lug Krag bolt and receiver? Can I find old ammunition and break it down for case and primer and reload new rounds. Appreciate the help as I obviously do not reload much anymore.
Thanks!
Wow! Bet that .22-3000 is a hoot to shoot! Could not find anything in my books. Found a link to loaded ammo ... https://www.buffaloarms.com/22-3000-lovell-50-grain-soft-p-amo223000.html and came up with these links from a google search ... https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q=.22-3000&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8 . Hi Bruce
I just bought the barrel and haven’t received it yet. It is a 1922 M1 22 RF barrel reamed out to 22-3000 according to the stampings on the side of the barrel. It allegedly has been machined at the breech to screw into a Krag receiver. Since I have lots of those receivers and a few odd stocks laying around I bought it reasonable and thought I would give it a try. I’ll check those leads and thanks!

Isn't the .22-3000 basically a .22-.250?
Isn't the .22-3000 basically a .22-.250?
I have reamers for a few 22s and smaller and then there is the 3000; for some reason it got labeled 3000 because of the speed.

22-3000 Lovell
Introduced by Hervey Lovell, the .22-3000 was a successful small bore wildcat. I would lead to further wildcat developments, like the 2R Lovell(2-R Lovell, or R2 Lovell). It is formed from .25-20 Single Shot cartridges, by reducing the neck to .22”. The neck taper, shoulder and neck profile remain the same. Deviations in the case lead to more powder capacity and minor improvements in performance.
The Lovell series of cartridges were so popular that companies like Griffin & Howe carried inventory of these cartridges until the 1960’s. The .22-300 is capable of propelling a .22” dia. 45 grain bullet at 2,616 fps. with 684 ft.-lbs. of energy.
Roberson Cartridge Company is a custom manufacture of Vintage, Obsolete, Hard to Find and Wildcat calibers.
My photo shows the following cartridges:
1) WRA Co 22 WCF 2) UMC 25-20 3) G&H 22-3000 4) Peters 25-21 5) WRA 25-25 6) UMC 28-30-120
The 25-20 was used to forum the 22-3000
As Alex Hawkins wrote; "This is my story and I am sticking with it". The 3000 had to with the beginning. It was one of the first rounds that obtained 3000 fps. And there were some that said someone exaggerated the results.

The Newton cartridge such as the 256 Newton and 30 Newton had velocities over 3000 fps
when introduced in 1913. Also the 22 savage Hi power / 22 Newton could both be loaded
to 3000 fps long before the 22-3000 G&H. But I do believe the 22-3000 was the most
accurate in a quality single shot rifle

There were two .25-20 cartridges, the .25-20 Single Shot, and the .25-20 WCF.
The most common 25-20 is the Winchester for the Model 1892 lever action and Marlin even had the
25-20 Marlin loading which was still a 25-20 but different powder and bullet
The original 25-21 and 25-25 were used in single shot rifles with black powder.
Of interest, the old 28-30-120 is still used in single shot rifle matches as quality 7 mm barrels
with different twist are available
RCS, thank you for your effort. I do not have any of the rounds you have displayed; I do not even look for them.

OK, just to show how lazy I can be,
What if I can?t find any ammunition? What would happen if I were to put a few rounds of 22 Hornet through the rifle just to see if it functioned?
Please, just kidding, but wondering.....
Re: Lazy. It would fire form to the chamber. Neck would likely be ever so slightly shorter. That's about all. JMHO. YMMV. HTH. Sincerely. Bruce
the 22 Hornet cartridge case is 1.403 inches long rim diameter .350 inch
the 22-3000 cartridge case is 1.635 inches long rim diameter .376
Re: RCS. Thank you! I stand corrected. Sincerely. bruce.
