Battle of Champion's Hill

Battlefield Trust has a "conservation lease" on this battlefield, which is mostly intact, now they are trying to raise money to buy it. I never knew about this fight until I read the article ... it was do or die for both sides in the war in the west. The Union won and that was it for Vicksburg - the victory there allowed the Union to cut its communications and surrounded its fortifications.

This is a good account of the battle, you can see how it could have gone either way.

.69 caliber bullets from Champion Hill. I never had the opportunity to hunt it, but got these from a friend that lived in the area.

Sounds familiar, sort of like destroying the economy.

The Coker house is the only surviving building barely. It was in ruins as late as 2005 but has since been completely restored to the condition it was in the mid 1860s.
