Loaded up some rounds for my 50 70 trapdoors today. I normally use starline brass as this brass is what's available. A few years ago I purchased a bag of mixed 50/70 brass at a gun show which contained several brands. Dixie , Bell, D.G.W. and one has BB and what to me looks like a duck on both sides of the B's. I have no idea what brand that one is. They all measure different as to the rim. The starline brass is the smallest and the rim thickness is also thinner than the others.
Are these all 50/70 government as only the starline brass says government and is the difference in material thickness only due to the age of the cases?

Would it be possible for you to load so that the bullet barely touches the throat? If so, you could eliminate problems w/ variable rim thickness as it would allow you to avoid having to headspace off the thickness of the rim. Sincerely. bruce.

Bruce, I load these rounds to an overall length of 2.215 which is data from a book on reloading for the 50/70, not sure of the author off hand. I have never worried about headspace nor have I ever slugged the bore in any of my trapdoors. I would guess that since the rim is thicker that would mean that the bullet would be further from the throat??

Your “BB” brass was made by Bertram Brass, in Australia.
