Canfield's book states serial number was stamped on Wed Jan 15, 1941, also a photo of this rifle in his book too.

Difficult to find these rifles, years ago the CMP used to auction off some of the
Educational Order Winchester receivers under the 100,500 serial number range.
Most of these sold for around 4K each and were parkerized more than one time.

Also collectors did not realize that the serial numbers would run over the 100,500
number range due to manufacturing errors and not passing inspection or proof
and test firing. Believe Canfield goes into this subject in his M1 Rifle book.

The second rifle in my photo is 102470 that I found among the imports (barrel
still has small import stamp) years ago. this Winchester still has the original barrel
and had a Winchester bolt with round firing pin4997849979

My dad was issued a Winchester M1 rifle at Ft Hood in 1942.. He carried it through North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. When the war ended, he was in Naples and his Liberty ship left from there.. about 3 days out, they were told that any "souvenirs" guns, etc would be confiscated and they would get in trouble and they were instructed to throw any contraband overboard. dad was so pissed, his M1 rifle went overboard along with his "souvenirs". So there is at least one Winchester at the bottom of the Med somewhere..
