A Canadian prison in Abbotsford, British Columbia, caught a pigeon in late December being used to smuggle drugs. Officials said the small bird was wearing a ?backpack? containing a ?fairly substantial? amount of methamphetamines.

John Randle, the Pacific regional president of the Union for Canadian Correctional Officers, said guards at the Pacific Institution were standing in one of the fenced inmate yards when they spotted a bird with a small package tied to its back.

Homing pigeons have been declining in numbers and performance in the electronic age. My kids back in the 1970s had racing pigeons and we belonged to a club. Races on the weekends would be from 25-100 miles one way. There was a capsule attached to a leg that contained the ID info of the owner and as the bird arrived would be locked into a clock to prove the flight time. Loosing birds was part of it and we once lost 22 out of 25 birds in a 50 mile race.

The attached article was written by someone that knew ZERO about the hobby. The races were all one legged not two. And although a pigeon can fly at over 60MPH a 170 mile race would take more than 3 hours.
