Latest acquisition is a virtually new Interarms era Walther PPK/S. Have never had such a small pistol. Bought it b/c it was pretty to me, and b/c it gives me a useful pocket pistol that I can carry when out and about, in the office or whatever. Shoots everything I've loaded in the magazine. Remington FMJ's have been less than impressive. Winchester FMJ's are noticeably better. Best of all is Fiocchi FMJ. Noticeably more bang and best accuracy of all types fired. Have not made up my mind about FMJ or JHP ammo. My opinion is that penetration will be most important. Consider that no round will do much if not well placed. That PPK/S hits like pointing my finger out to 7-10 yds w/ one hand. Same results at 15 yds. w/ two hands. Will need to pick up a second magazine ... and ammo! Sincerely. bruce.

Last one I bought was a Glock 43x. Never been much of a Glock fan, but I kind of liked this little 10 shot 9mm. Already have a Glock 17.
With the new anti-gun law they're trying to pass, the wait for the background check took two months being so backed up. I have two AR lowers
on Order and hope to get them before the State passes the new laws.

Interesting rifle and scope.

I know Weaver was a lot like Marlin when it came to using up salable goods.
Those look like Marksman caps on the turrets.
Love the blued steel tubes a lot. It's too bad Weaver dropped those~ much better looking on classic guns to my eye.

I have a handful of older weavers and redfield's for whatever reason,
have one on a sled mount for an AR,

Someone got tired of breaking hammer handles. I thought of doing similar with shovels and rakes by welding a steel water pipe on in place of the wood handle.

The guy inadvertently made something interesting. The "handle" has some spring to it. Another thing that I should consider doing, but won't. I swear in a couple of years I'm going to see it and say, yup, that was my idea.
Your late on the water pipe...I've seen it and used it. The metal is way slicker than wood and it adds a little weight. It just doesn't feel right. It sucks but in a pinch...
It was my idea to pay for groceries with a charge card. 1973 I got my first one. I bought things with it(but in fifty yrs. I've never had a balance), but you still had to stand in line at the grocery and waited for the guy in front to count out the bills and coins and God forbid, the old lady who slowly wrote out a check.
A couple of years ago I saw the last Old Lady pay for her groceries with a check. I should have gotten a picture.

Curious about dot size, and ring diameter. I'd ditch the A/R riser on it for something a bit lower over the bore to use on my old school rifles...

The riser is there to put the dot above the front sight, so I'll probably leave it in place. I've got an AR with flat top rear but front sight still in place.

I recall Elmer Keith complaining AR sights sat too high back in the day. I never minded that too much. I tried an AK in Viet Nam and didn't think it was a viable weapon because the magazine was always in the road. But I've gotten used to that. SW

7 bladed aperture.

https://i.imgur.com/Hyrcg3N.jpg

Not too shabby.

Wide open here at f2 and minimum focus distance of a bit over a foot according to the scale on the lens. In actual practice it's about 2 1/4 feet away from the image plane. Good detail with slight vignetting and a bit of barrel distortion.

Quick scenic of nothing at all shows moderately good definition at f5.6. Focus point was the red bricks on the structure in the back-ground.

Might be a while yet before car and truck tires are made and packaged like this. The Kevlar mounting beads on these bicycle tires mean they're foldable, and a heck of a lot easier to transport. From Wally. There's a lot of very positive on line user reviews, and the wally pricing makes them quite a steal apparently.

There it is with the new Kevlar folding tire on the front wheel. Outer diameter differences are quite obvious here. Much improved stability and control with the narrower profile tire on the front.

After a test ride today of about six miles or so, I think the bearing issue may be finally dealt with. I'll check for side-play on the wheel in the a.m., and take it from there.

By the looks of the seat adjustment I'd say you were 6' or more.

As a kid I had a Sears JC Higgins bike with a 2 speed hub. No extra chains or sprockets, you changed gears by lightly tapping the peddle backwards like you applying the brakes. After I married me and the wife bought a couple of cheap 10 speeds. We didn't ride them much and they just turned to rust, even though they were out of the weather. That's why we bought cheapo's.

My last employer provided us with vehicles but also bikes to ride around the plant. They only bought Schwinn's. I know Schwinn is sold world wide and has gone through some hands but I was surprised when the latest one they bought for me was stamped "Made in Romania".

Doc Sharptail
07-10-2023, 08:21
Used to be a shade over 6' when I was a bit younger. Probably closer to 5'-11 3/4" now, but inseam is still 32". 18" MTB frames are the norm now, and actually a little too small for most normally sized North Americans. I see a lot of high seat post extension these days. Not quite to the limit line on the seat post on mine.

The origin stickers are still on mine with design and assembly done in Canada, and major fabrication is now done in China.
It's the heaviest bicycle I've ever owned. The majority of it is steel frame, and I estimate total weight being close to 40 lbs. I get to lug that thing up 8 steps every time I leave here with it.

I think I am going to look for a higher profile road style tire for that rear wheel. I've gotten a boost in speed with the bearing job done, and don't want to lose it by going to a smaller outer diameter rear tire.

Doc Sharptail

I forgot to state the Schwinn's my employer bought were plain Jane standard bikes with standard handlebars and single speed. They were steel framed and heavy too.

Made a major improvement to riding comfort on this bike with an angle adjustable replacement handlebar stem.

https://i.imgur.com/QpesMji.jpg

There's the factory thread-less stem. It had me leaning so far forward that I was pulling myself forward on the seat to a really uncomfortable sitting position.

https://i.imgur.com/MKf0tyc.jpg

There's the adjustable angle replacement. It will elevate to 65 degrees. I don't have it quite up that far at roughly 50 degrees.

Now I'm staying in the proper place on the seat.
It also takes the strain off the lower back, shoulders, and arms. I did have to buy an extra tube spacer to put under the different base dimension stem. The friendly local bike shop was a big help in finding the right sized aluminum spacer ring.

What have you bought recently? New gun - knife - car - cool tennies? This is the thread for bragging about it! SW

My gun buying days are mostly over unless something just comes along I can't live without.

With the yards, the heat/humidity and my age I'm more concerned about yard tools to make my efforts easier and quicker. After accumulating a bunch of gas saws, trimmers and so on I'm leaning towards battery stuff now because often by the time you get a gas powered device started you're too exhausted to do any work with it.

Last buys have been a Dewalt 20v blower and pole saw, a Hart (WalMart) 20v line trimmer and sprayer and a tiny off-brand 8" 20v chainsaw that can be held with one hand and used while on a ladder. The saws I haven't used yet. Also bought a B&D elec edger to use as a stump/root grinder---not much luck with that so far but it will work with enough patience.

Until fall weather arrives I'm spending as little time outside as possible.

Nikkor 28-85mm f3.5-4.5 A/I-s zoom.

https://i.imgur.com/F5CQ0NW.jpg

A look at the somewhat dusty front element.
I have since cleaned it, and it appears to be in v.g. to exc. condition.

Just a few quick comments:

7 aperture blades, set somewhat un-evenly. This hasn't been a problem in other lens that display the same thing. A bit toothy spacing between the blades up until a little past f8. Should make for interesting sun-stars, given the proper conditions.

There were cost-cutting measures applied to this one. I think it may be my first Nikkor with plastic aperture and zoom rings. The focus ring is still aluminum and rubber gripping.
15 elements in 3 groups construction. It is by no means a small lens, and tends a bit towards the weighty side. My copy is missing the rabbit ears aperture linkage. It was probably removed to go onto some or other mirror-less camera.

I've been able to find little in the way of reviews on this lens. The few I did find were mixed, with almost all of them mentioning distortion at the wide end and wide-open.

The twin ring system appeals to me a bit more than the sliding one touch trombone affair.

It appears to focus just slightly past infinity at all focal length settings.

Will get a few shots up here from both in the photography thread in the next few days.

Seems there's a whole "sneaker culture" populated by "sneaker heads" of which I knew nothing. Looked into the matter to find collectors with pay well into six figures for super rare variations. Learned from YT vids there's also a big fake problem with Nike sneakers. But I got these from the Nike store, so GTG that way.

And all this time I thought I do well with the English language... until she told me these are "a slay". During the conversation, I learned she fancies a pair of "Panda Dunks". Right around $100 (as were these) so that's doable. I learn something every day whether I mean to or not! SW

You got that right about package deals. As for the M-42 mount, seriously, no. I really wouldn't have bothered if it weren't for the Tamron lens. Bit of a lemon with a seized battery cover and crumbling mirror cushion. The 50 F2 super Takumar on the camera is nice enough, but not anything special to one with no native digital mount. These were a common item during the imperial period and just into WW2. Certain companies bought them in quantity for use as gifts to customers. In addition to the mini bayonets, there were also mini daggers also used for gifts and awards. The seller lists a mini Luftwaffe dagger for over $1000 and mini SS daggers for a little less.

I was a bit flush from the sale of the Spotmatic and the Tamron 200mm. There was enough there to buy the nikkor, renew my d/l, and get a samwhich and a medium coffee. so I'm likely ahead a bit. My beautiful neighbors husband (before he died) was a roving photographer who submitted a few shots to the newspaper. She gave me his old M-42 lenses to try out. 'radioactive' and very yellow. I bought an adapter, tried them out, and then gave them back. I wasn't afraid of the neutrons but like most of the old time lenses I tried, they sucked. Well, they were pretty old.

The risk from thoriated glass is almost nil~ certainly a lot less than the old radium wrist-watch dials that were in vogue at one time.
The first variant SMC Takumar 55 mm lens that was on that camera was nice enough, but no where in the league of the nikkor H 50mm f2 from the same time period. Since I'm rather highly invested in the nikon F mount system, there isn't much sense in going the m-42, or glassed adapter route- I'm totally fine with what I'm doing so far. The big f/f sensor of the D-810 sure seperates the wheat from the chaff when it comes to glass. Some of the 3rd party glass is surprisingly good, and most of it is pretty mediocre.

I really should do a list of favorite lenses, maybe graded on Image Quality, which may be of some interest here.
Temperature is breaking 35 F here today. I should get on the bike with camera bag and see what I can come up with before it's too dark.

Have one 50 round drum coming next Monday. And some 30 round stick mags. And yes, they will break the bank!

Many years ago I got to shoot a 1928A1, It was the first F/A I shot. I remember that joker being very heavy and no muzzle rise when firing.

Congrats on your purchase. I didn't know these were still made and available.

It is very heavy at about 13lbs unloaded. The full autos are a little lighter with the short barrel, but not by much. I may turn this into an SBR down the road. I purchased this with the shortest barrel available at 14.5 inches. With the fixed compensator, it is a legal 16.5 inches.

Happy Christmas to me! My Hungarian friend came through again bidding on a German auction site for this DDR RR medal. When it and the west German RR medals arrive, I'll have enough stuff to fill another shadow box with RR memorabilia. SW

What were the medals awarded for?

This one was for meritorious service or similar. DDR commies were as big on medals as the French in many cases. SW

A little more on the DDR RR medals and awards I got a while back.

These 3 are medals for 10, 20 and 30 years faithful service. The 30 year example seems a bit fancier.
54276

At first I thought this one was for good work repairing track. A Euro pal told me ZOE is a department of DDR's railroad and this commemorates service therin.
54277

This might be a collar tab - possibly a cap badge.
54278

Learned a bit researching these. Reichsbahn is mentioned on some. I thought that was the Nazi RR and the term was abandoned when they were defeated in 1945. It was... except in East Germany and the Soviet sector of Berlin. East Germany didn't get much done except try to run their steamers on lignite, and not very successfully at that.

And a Christmas gift from my Hungarian friend - cap for a Hungarian national railway "hogger". From the Warsaw Pact years when Hungary was supposed to be communist. My friend was surprised the cap with commie star had survived. SW

Couple of items that came at no cost in the last week:

https://i.imgur.com/kOMg8S8.jpg

Argus Seventy Five camera that takes 620 film.
It's twin lens reflex design with fixed focus.

https://i.imgur.com/MMR9ZXJ.jpg
There's still a roll of Kodacolor-X 620 film in it that has been exposed. That film used C-22 processing, which is similar to Kodachrome in that both start out as B&W images, with the color dyes being the last part of the process. First 620 camera I've seen with a take-up spool still remaining in it.
It's a wall-hanger at this stage of the game.

https://i.imgur.com/Mkdl2kd.jpg

There's a look at the somewhat dusty viewfinder showing it's shelf queen provenance.

The single speed spring driven blade shutter still works at about 1/80 sec at the "inst" position, and bulb at the "Time" position.

https://i.imgur.com/rWbf2WV.jpg

There's the slightly dented finder cover in the closed position.

https://i.imgur.com/sHs5cjc.jpg

Canon GL-2 video camera. This I would have not taken if it didn't have the S/D card driven stills photography feature. The 1.7 megapixels would probably elicit a good laugh these days...

https://i.imgur.com/LV98S0D.jpg

... but the glass it wears is very interesting, even by today's standards.

It uses tiny DV digital video tapes for video shooting.

I ran the battery up in it's charger last night, and if there's time today, I'll try popping a card into it to see what's up with that glass. It powers up normally, and both EVF finders light and show a steady clean image.
This camera nudged the 2 grand mark (list) when it was released 20 years ago. Likely obsoleted by it's video imaging format today.

Sorry, but C-22 is still a chromogenic process (dye couplers in the emulsion) very similar to Ektachrome reversal film. It used the older CD-3 Color developer in the low temp process & can be processed as a B&W by not coupling the dyes. That's also why you could "Cross Process" C22 (kodacolor-X) in E-4 or E-4 (Ektachrome-X) in C-22 for artistic effects.
You can do a similar process today exchanging E-6 & new Ektachrome emulsions in C-41 & vice versa.
Never try C-22 film or Ektachrome-X in modern chemistry though the emulsion will be stripped from the backing in development! wrecking the film & killing the chemistry & processor's filters too.

Both c-22 and old kodachrome can be developed in normal grain type B&W developers eg original Rodinal at 1-100 of all things. You are correct in the emulsion being on the "Back" of C-22 film. The kodachrome images done this way are pretty ghoulish without stripping the dye layers, and not really usable images, but images none the less.

No intent of dishonesty here- I've done it myself accidently with Kodachrome 64 and Rodinal, which is how I found out about this in the first place. C-22 is listed as developable in Rodinal on several photo sites.

I'm not implying dishonesty. I apologize if you took it that way.
I think you misunderstand.
The emulsion(s) are still on front, below the anti abrasion top coating.

The rear anti-scratch/antihalation dies are on the back. Those are what detaches in High temp processing.

Stills from the Canon GL-2 video camera:
It seems to work, with albeit low data input into the photo. The lens on this looks like a good one. Image above is the first for me out of the camera~ shot at about 3 feet. It is about a 55-60% crop, and is a bit noise soft.

Screen grab off the T.V. from Nat Geo's Life Below Zero series.

It seems to work fairly well under generally poor indoor lighting conditions. I suppose I'll get around to shooting a bit of video with it later on once I get tape availability sorted.

I've got 3 here that will probably work. They're pretty small- about half way between a mini micro audio cassette and a regular audio cassette.

Video is not really my thing- I've done some, mostly off a wheeled tripod/fluid head set-up, but that was way back in the 80's. The film and digital SLR's are taking the bulk of my time these days. At least I can still say I'm shooting ;)

I'm not really a video guy but I acquired an older Samsung video camera that used both memory cards & Mini DV cassettes. Like you say a shrunken cassette, but bigger than an audio micro.
IIRC B&H still sell them among others.
Good luck with yours, I remember a tip I heard years back is to FF & then Rewind fully before using if they've been stored a long time.
