The Baxters are fighting the Rojo brothers again tonight on Grit TV. Another great spaghetti western by Sergio Leone..
"When a man with . 45 meets a man with a rifle, you said, the man with a pistol's a dead man. Let's see if that's true. Go ahead, load up and shoot."
I'm going to have to get me a pair of six shooters.....someday when I grow up....
I ditched cable and went internet only, using 2 smart TV's ,
between Samsung TV, and Pluto TV, I have several hundred channels,
so far, I have been stuck on Star Trek ( the western in space) and British TV,
need to look for Grit,
never been a yuge western fan, but do like the spaghetti westerns, and it has been a while since I seen one

No cable , no internet tv here, just over the air hdtv antenna...you should be able to get Me tv, Cozi tv and Grit up your way...wife gets bs netflix,
I read mostly and listen to the police/ fire scanner which is better than any tv show.
Broadcastify.com
Damn, I had forgotten how good that movie was.. Clint just blew away the Rojos again...
my HD antenna works great upstairs, but the first floor,,, well sometimes I get everything, sometimes nothing,
was that way years ago when I had AT&T for a cell, upstairs, talk and dial out all day long, downstairs, only could chat on the cell phone if I had my hand on the fridge,,,
verizon, no issues
My wife cut the cable. I am thrilled. Much greater variety of choices ... westerns, scifi, history, etc. Sincerely. bruce.

Many years ago we kept the police monitor on. It was good to keep up with what was happening around you.
The police have never liked for the public to know what is happening and showing up at the scene for entertainment so they got together and went to more exacting frequencies. Instead of 150.0 (or such) they went to 150.001 (or so). Most existing civilian monitors can't scan that far and fixed crystals of their "secret" frequencies aren't sold.
Some channels are still open here, such as jailer, ambulance, local fire depts, etc, just not the ones the police communicate on.

We had a Bearcat scanner long time ago..Obsolete now..
I think all PDs and FDs use the Trunked system which, I believe, switches comms over multiple incremental frequencies...
The site I mentioned, broadcastify.com, decodes the Trunked system through local members. Many places don't want the bad guys listening so they are not available.
I watched that the other night, it was on one of the channels of my Direct TV.
Where I live they won't string/bury cable or, fiber optic. My only choice is a dish.

I know Draper and Pulaski county after serving my time in Blacksburg...surprised they can't run cable down interstate 81 from Radford....beautiful area where you live....I used to fly fish on the New river down your way 40 years ago...
For a Few Dollars More is on tonight....another great evening in front of the boob tube...

As bad as Direct is (what we have), I hear more customer complaints against Dish and Mediacom. Don't know about Cox Cable and the others.
High School buddy had a scanner that was his mom's,
she worked for a local mall, (was in charge of the place) and had one to keep an ear out for any issues in the area
in the early days of Cell phones, her scanner would pick up calls, sometimes
so we would listen in,
back then the only people who had Cells were Real Estate Agents, and most of them were apparently gay,
some hilarious conversations,, then a year or so goes by and tech changed,,,

Small world,
It is nice are Rural but you'd think by now they would upgrade things out in the county. As little as I watch TV, Direct is ok for what I watch though the price has gotten ridiculous over the years for the basic package and what's actually "watchable" on it.

You got that right!!
I have a question: I understand why I have to watch commercials on broadcast TV -- that's what pays for the programming. But I pay for Direct TV -- so how come there are still commercials?

Cable companies are not going to run cable in rural areas. They only run it where there is a large population with the aspects of getting a lot of subscribers. A dish antenna you simply point at the satellite. Satellite TV sucks except when it rains and you lose connection. Cable TV sucks all the time.
Since cable equates to population you are far better off without it, possibly forever.

That is a gripe of mine as well. The answer is "not enough competition"
On "pay TV" there should never be a commercial of any kind, zero, nada. Instead, we have as many if not more than free TV. We have the Direct TV DVR (Genie) and when you put it on pause you even get commercials. Old sitcoms are butchered up with all possible scenes deleated to make room for additional commercials. Often, shows don't run even times to even times like 12:00 to 12:30. They will run from 12:00 to 12:36, again to make way for additional commercials.
Then there are all the hispanic shows and reality TV shows where directors gets jobs for all their family. I only watch about a dozen channels on a regular basis.
What do you do--cut the cord? I don't care to "stream" plus I hear those networks have commercials as well. I like the DVR being able to program, record, playback at any time and FF thru things. I almost never watch basic, local TV.
You got that right!!

the commercials pay for the programing, however Direct TV is the provider,
as in they are the middle man that you use to get the TV programs, they don't make the content, or even own or provide the channel, they just provide you access

I still object to having to watch commercials on TV I pay for.

The point is the provider should be getting enough money to pay for the programing. We pay about $130 a month for basic, Genie and what they call a HD package of about 4 channels (Hallmark, Sony, other stuff) that also contains commercials.

Never owned a television, always had a library card. And now the dog gets bent out of shape when I'm reading.

Actually, that's NOT capitalism. Capitalism is private ownership of the means of production and distribution, operated for profit in a competitive environment. It is the competitive environment that makes capitalism work so well -- and that's what we don't have with cable and satellite TV.

yes you do,
got a cell phone? and good coverage? get a hot spot and stream or use it to connect to free tv programs, free that show commercials,
got open area, or enough for a sat dish or receiver? dish network or starlink
got cable or fiber? several options there, (we can opt for Fios or Comcast)
plenty of choices, just pick your poison,
each, however , is still a provider, the channels will probably have advertising on them if 'free' or you may have to pay a monthy premium or fee to get commercial free, (apple tv, hbo, etc
