I remember my grandmother talking about those 'telegrams'. She had 3 sons in the service. Anytime the 'telegraph' boy showed up at one of the homes on the street (they were the typical Philadelphia 'row' houses), everyone on the block knew about it almost immediately. And everyone knew the homes were the boys were away in the service.
