View Full Version : John Books gives Gillum a Shooting Lesson
...plus a more modern illustration.
At the end Books tells Gillum he's survived because unlike "most" when his life is threatened he doesn't hesitate.
The shooting lesson from "The Shootist" and a more modern illustration of Books principle from "Justified."

Of course the problem with the whole instant reaction thing is you could be wrong, notice at the end Givens says "I hope I got that right"

One of the reasons why on my shoulder rig I have a can of pepper spray. Of course, at my age I will use the Fred Sanford draw to buy some time.

When I was training as a LEO, we used revolvers as this is what our Sheriff mandated. My duty was a S&W 4"M28, so only 6 rds available. The prosecuting attorney who was our legal educator said that we were responsible for EVERY round fired...good or bad.

Notice at the end Givens delivers what in my opinion, is the most important line in the clip, "I hope I got that right." Everyone is spot on about being wrong. Bill Hickocks life changed for ever when after an "altercation" he heard somebody run up behind him, turned and shot his deputy dead. the deputy was one of his best friends. It changed Hickock's life forever and not for the better.
The prosecutor Sam referred to is absolutely right. If you're an LEO discretion is supposed to trump speed. If you're a civilian with no qualified immunity he's even more right. Of course Books being a 19th century professional gunman didn't worry much about that.
At one point in the series Art Mullen, Givens boss, says he's on speed dial with Internal Affairs.

Our Sheriff had a policy, "Dead men tell no tales!" I came close to killing three men one night, afterwards I did not like the feeling!
