Don't know if this is true or not but it sounds logical.

Throwing hush puppies to the dogs?
What a waste of a perfectly good pair of shoes ;)
I can still get some really good hush puppies from an old shrimp and soul food joint. But it’s sort of a long drive from my house.
Somewhere along the way I began dunking them in malt vinegar.

I became addicted to the Puerto Rican "national Dish" when working there.
"Sorullitos de mais"!
Sort of a hot dog roll made from hush-puppy mix.
Served with mayo/ketchup dipping sauce.
Ingredients
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. freshly ground pepper
1 large egg
1/2 cup buttermilk
1 cup minced onion
2 cups vegetable oil

Try dipping them in Sweet Baby Rays Honey BBQ Sauce. Great on Ribs.

There are as many hush puppy recipes as there are tales about their name origin.
Not saying some escaping slaves didn’t toss some of their food to slow down dogs. That was an old trick at that time.
You already probably have fried fish, fried onions and/or fried potatoes. Why do you need fried hush puppies?
Add a bit of milk, beer, or butter and cook like pan cakes. Same taste, different texture!

For all the extra salt, grease, and carbs.

Exactly! Akin to adding an order of onion rings or poppers to your patty melt and fries.
