You are unable to leave the premises of a nursing home, an assisted living facility, or an emergency room and a long list of other places. In order to leave the local facility, it has to be with a next of kin or a legal guardian.

In my case, I need to get my will out of the safe and secure vault at the bank so my lawyer can update it. My closest next of kin lives 225 miles or a 8+ hour round drive to do a 5 minute chores!!!!

Look it up. A 5 assisted stay at a nursing home can become a lifetime sentence with no appeal.

I had an elderly aunt who was in a hospice center. Her sister is the one who placed her there and probably was the right move but the sister signed a "do not resuscitate" form which the hospice center added that no food be given either. The sister of my aunt wanted her to die for the inheritance.

There was nothing I could do as far as taking her someplace to eat or bringing her food. They only fed her a tiny container of pudding a day. Needless to say, she didn't live long there.

In your case, the years past (way past), you might could have relied on the mayor of the town, the police chief, or a pastor to trust with your belongings. Now, you can't trust anyone. I would guess you have no option but to get your son or someone to get into your safety deposit box.

Sometimes there no other options but to enter such a facility. They have their rules for the safety of the patient and the liability of the facility but a person needs to think twice and know their limits before hand.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Hope all goes well or at least accomplished. You might consider moving to an assisted living facility close to a relative. They are very expensive but you are supplied a small motel size room or two and they feed you 3 meals a day. You are free to leave and return as you wish as long as you are able to drive. Some of them have 15 passenger vans that will take you places if you can't drive yourself. They are not a nursing home though and will kick you out if you can't do most things for yourself.

We're all getting there and need to think.

Very glad to read your post. Hope and pray that you are doing better. Regarding your post, Do not doubt it. Once in these types of institutions which are permitted a degree of some control over a person, it can become difficult to recover independence of action, etc. Do not know if this applies to your current circumstances. If so, do hope you are able to resolve this situation to your complete satisfaction. Sincerely. bruce.
