I was reading through Gary Cunningham's Bayonet Points #10 and noticed on his detail photo of the grips removed on a 1917 bayonet, there was a gold color under the finish. Any ideas of what that is a result of?
Here is a picture from Bayonet Points #10 to which I reference.
Thanks

Pat,
If you go down the page to the picture of the later made M1917 with plastic grips removed, he explains that the gold color is residue from the brazing process. Close examination of other bayonet pics will show this residue also.
