    The Japanese used a type of laquer, made from the Sumac plant, called Urushi. Here is some interesting information on Urushi.

    Nice job on the refinish. Usually refinishing parts, especially stocks, diminishes the collector value. However in your particular case, the damage had already been done, so your efforts were an improvement!

    Second treatment of cold blue applied. L to R how I got the buttplate, one treatment of cold blue, 2nd treatment of cold blue.

    Left to Right, The day I brought it home, today after some "OOOO" steel wool and some slip 2000 oil.
