X prefix serial numbers on Model 1911 and 1911A1 pistols are renumbered. If the pistol lost it's serial number for any reason from being stolen and recovered with the serial number removed, or lost during the refinishing process, the new serial number had an X prefix. According to Clawson this was initiated in April of 1924, beginning with serial number X1000. The five character serial number was used through serial number X4385. The numbering system then jumped to X2693614.
Personally I would not buy one of the X numbered pistols without good authentication. The system has been used by the less scrupulous to legitimize a pistol that has had it's serial number removed.
A few weeks ago I was offered X6722 with DCM docs.
According to Clawson and Meadows the five character numbers ended at X4385.
I know, I saw the docs.
The one I am asking about has a S/N of X2694128.
