Some indication of the desperation to develop a workable semi-automatic infantry rifle. How very fortunate for the US and the allies of WWII that John Garand was able to take a initial design and develop it into the gas operated M-1 rifle. Sincerely. bruce.

also of interest is that the original gas trap M1 rifle adopted in 1936 was designed to operate with the 30M1 rifle cartridge not the 30 M2 cartridge

Says circa 1918, but John Garand didn't go to Springfield Armory until 11-19. Maybe built in his garage?
