1959 VeeDubs didn't have a fuel gauge as is displayed immediately to the right of the speedo in the first photo. Don't know about the coffee makers but the fuel gauge was added in late 1961 for the 1962 year model. Before that there was only a reserve in the fuel tank which was operated by a lever. When the driver realized he was either out of fuel or running low, he could reach under the dash and turn to lever which resumed fuel flow to the engine. This reserve fuel capacity was limited to about 2-3 gallons and soon after being on "reserve" an aware driver better be on the lookout for a gas station.
Remember as a kid in grade school the March of Dimes. Students were issued a card holder in which to place dimes and at the end of the drive cards were collected turned in for support of the polio vaccine. Glass jars for March of Dimes collections could also be found at many restaurants, bars and cafes; just about anywhere a person would receive change from a cashier after paying for a meal. The March of Dimes was a very successful campaign.

Agatha Christie worked in the pharmaceutical section of a hospital in World War 1 and again in WW2. Apparently that is where she learned about poisons
