Ejection seats.
A little longer and harder to read article than the 22LR history article.
I've heard that when a pilot has to use an ejection seat the G force compresses the spine about 1" (permanently). I assume most of the damage is done the first time and not repeated equally every time because a person would look like a walking pancake after a few ejections.
